About Mindfulness

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is something you have already experienced numerous times in everyday life.  It is those moments when you are really noticing what is happening right now and choosing to be aware on purpose.

Most people have experienced the sensation of 'waking up' from being on autopilot while driving or walking somewhere familiar and then suddenly realising you don't really remember how you got there.  Practising moving your attention to what you are doing - in the case of this course while in or around your car, helps to improve your concentration, creating and strengthening your attention skills.

Many of us spend time with a narrow focus, paying attention to what is going on in our mind, our thoughts, feelings, worries, memories, day dreams, things that have already happened, things that might happen in the future.  An inner dialogue of thoughts and emotions, like a hamster wheel going round and round and this can be extremely distracting when you should be focusing on your own driving and other road users around you.  Practising the mindfulness exercises is like attention training and will help to interrupt your inner world of thoughts.  The more you exercise your attention, the stronger your attention becomes.

You don't have to meditate to be mindful so if meditation isn't your thing please don't be put off, you can be mindful in just 20 seconds if that's all the time you have.  The mindfulness exercises in the course take from between 20 seconds to 4 minutes and are all suggested to fit in around your normal working day without taking up extra time.

The mindfulness techniques used in this course are based on Mindful Resilience Enhancement (MRE) which aims to enable people to be more mindful in their everyday lives through simple and accessible mindfulness practices.
